The first recordings of the fly fishing show that this fishery was conducted by fishermen from Macedonia. Very little was written about fly fishing in recent years, but the 1496 Treaty was published on fishing at an angle. Later, in 1653 Izaak Walton wrote a "The Complete Angler 'book contains several chapters about fly fishing. Many flying clubs fishing began in the 1800s in England and this served to popularize the sport much.

Fishermen in southern England, were in favor of dry fly fishing and wet fly considers a distortion of the poor fishing for their sport. The U.S. fishermen in the Catskills in New York began to experiment with the dry fly in the late 1800s designs. It began designing artificial flies to imitate the insects that trout feed on.
