Benidorm has existed from 1325 when it obtained its town charter is the Admiral Bernat de Serri in Polop Castle which was then part of the kingdom of Valencia. Delivery letters of the town was held until the 17th century as a way to eliminate the Moors and Christians living in the area allow.
The first settlements in the area Montbenidorm can be found on a hill you can see at the other end of the Poniente beach. Here is a cemetery and remains of an Iberian settlement dating from the first century BC C. Archaeologists discovered the remains of fishing nets here Benidorm firmly linking the sea before. A figure of Tanit, a Phoenician goddess of fertility and sky was also discovered here as remnants of Roman settlements nearby.
It is the long history of fishing that created the myth that Benidorm was a small fishing village, when in fact it never was. Benidorm fishermen were actually sea fishermen who spent many months in the Atlantic, South America and northern Spain. They were famous throughout Spain for their skills with traps and were highly appreciated in the 18th century. That for many years had used Almadraba compensation ancient Arab tradition to catch tuna by placing a maze of deep water pools compensation progressively smaller inshore. A tradition that lasted until the 1950s in the Rincon de Loix to catch tuna during their migrations in the Mediterranean.
Grew around Benidorm of the rock now known as El Castillo (in the old town), but were hampered initially by the incursions of pirates during the 15th century and the town was almost destroyed as people fled. In the 16th and 17th centuries the city strengthened the castle is rebuilt and made bigger (sad, but today nothing remains of the castle). In 1665 the city began to grow quite as much water
was purchased within the city along the canals. This was the main cause of the growing population at this time.
With the water came from agriculture and olive trees sprung up around Benidorm with all replacement meters of land used to grow the product of value and as orange and lemon plantations. If you go to Raco Conil a conservation area on the way to Villa Joyosa take a left at the Casino you can still see the terraces and abandoned farms I was not used since the turn of the century many of those who still have the old olive trees on them. It was the sea and agriculture that would keep the city until the 19th century when built the road to Alicante.
After opening the access road of Alicante and the national railroad joined Madrid and Alicante Spain from other parts of the first tourists began arriving in Benidorm. It was also during this time that Spain lost many of the colonies in South America so much needed form of income deep-sea fishing began aa decline. In the 1950s the Almadraba who had obtained compensation income for many local families was closed in the Raco de l'Oix From now known as the Rincon, the heart of the tourist area of Benidorm.
At this point the mayor of the city approved plans to build Avenues now famous throughout the Levant, which would be welcomed at first, the Spanish tourists and later in Holland, Germany and Britain. Vacation Packages first arrived in Benidorm for as little as 21 euros for a week half board at the airport four star Hotel Delfin, including air travel to Valencia which opened in 1933. In those early years of the coach trip from Valencia took four hours. The arrivals late at night when hotel kitchens were closed required a stop at a tapas bar across the road where a bottle of wine cost only 9 pesetas.
Alicante airport was not opened until April 1967 Once opened, this was the biggest factor contributing to the success of Benidorm as a holiday resort, with the introduction of modern airliners. These were more cost effective and flight for the first time enabled the ordinary family to enjoy holidays abroad and the base
beginning of the end for many coastal towns of Great Britain and Europe. The number of passengers reached 8.9 million in 2005 and a new terminal scheduled for opening in 2009 to cope with the increase Air traffic out of which 80% comes from foreign destinations.
Benidorm was the model that all resorts are based on principles. The success culminated in 1977, when Benidorm entertained 12 million visitors a figure that has never been bettered.Today Benidorm contributes 12% of gross national product of Spain which means that revenues from the cities is a huge € 16853000 every day of the year. * This is an incredible 702,802 euros per hour.
