What about small businesses? Can you sit this one? In a word, no. Here are six reasons:

1. The laws that once applied only large companies are encroaching on smaller companies. Even the bakeries and gas stations must now comply with clean air regulations.

2. Small businesses often have an advantage in innovation. Of the more than $ 100 million in R & D money each year fell on the "technology clean market, most are intended for new and small businesses that historically have produced more products and services advances.

3. Va after the consumption choices of individuals remains difficult politically, but advocacy groups have no problem demanding that small businesses reduce their impacts. Thus, while personal cars are not attacked NGOs, emissions of fleets of taxis and delivery services of a relatively attractive target.

4. The Information Age is to reduce the costs of carrying out small-scale actors. New sensors, information systems and communication technologies make monitoring of pollution and monitor compliance cheaper every day. Even small businesses now have difficulty in flying under the radar.

5. Large customers are putting pressure on small business suppliers to meet environmental standards. A small New York-based software developer that we find it difficult to answer questions posed by a Tokyo-based telecom company with an aggressive audit program for its supply chain. To remain on the list of preferred suppliers, the company had to implement an Environmental Management System – Much more than a company of its size would not normally do.

6. Small businesses can be more nimble than its larger competitors. Business business can move quickly to take advantage of changing circumstances or to meet the demands of niche. Q Collection, a "sustainable" home business produces sofas, tables and chairs without toxic dyes and wood sourced entirely from sustainably managed forests. The furniture is priced at the upper end market, but the company has found a customer base of interior designers who want the natural choice. And Hawaii-based Kona Blue has launched a fish farm environment to meet the growing demand for fish raised without hormones and antibiotics.
