Are you a woman who has an interest in fly fishing, but fear getting involved in a sport for men only? For years, fly fishing has been considered by many as an outdoor activity for men. Given that the first known English book on the subject was written by a woman, Dame Juliana Berners, seems wonder that fly fishing only recently has attracted more women to the sport.

It is true that most fly fishermen today are the men, but I am seeing more and more women try their hand at catching fish and learning to cast a fly rod. Women are discovering the peace and tranquility that can be of fording a river, matching the hatch and the increasing quality of fish.

Many manufacturers of fly fishing equipment are now produce art made especially for women. Not in the sense of making a fashion statement in the river, but for better a better fit. There are even poles that are made thinking of women who have claws of a smaller diameter to fit smaller hands, more typical of women.

While there is increasing number of women who enjoy fly fishing with their husbands and male friends, some are more comfortable learning the sport with other women. Many cities and districts now have women only fly fishing clubs in which to meet, the plan fly fishing outings, teach each other techniques fly tying and enjoy the camaraderie. At present there are many guides and fly fishing instructors from the fairer sex, too.

In 2006, a team of five women participated in the Canadian Fly Fishing Championships held on the Grand River near Fergus, Ontario and a woman, Sunny Vanderkloof of British Columbia, arrived sixth in the competition of the 40 fishermen.

A remarkable organization, Casting For Recovery, began in 1996 with the objective of providing end trips free week for women who have had breast cancer. These trips include professional instruction not only fly, but the identification of insects, fish can be fed in order to select the best bait to fly fish, basic equipment, and knotted. Fly fishing is a perfect sport for those in recovery – the movement of iron can be soft and at the same time, strengthen weak soft tissue

I was recently talking with a professional guide who often told me that women are much easier to teach the art of fly fishing as well. While men often have the idea that they need to use pressure on the way, women can often take the rhythm of fly fishing much more quickly than a man who has spent most of his fishing experience trying to cast your bait as far as possible, using casting and spinning rods.

So if you're a woman who has an interest in taking fly fishing, go out and find an instructor or a club your area and give it a try. Most professional instructors and guides will be able to provide with the equipment you need. Do not worry spending money on art to discover if they want to enjoy the sport and do more of it.
