remote fly fishing lodge

Last time I was in Tanzania and Zanzibar some fourteen years ago and is where he first fell under the powerful spell of Africa – I just do not could overcome the great plains of the Serengeti with the odd acacia tree in the landscape and the mountains in the distance, sporadically dotted with red shukkas the Masai and their cattle. Literally breathtaking and "classic Africa." I really wanted to revisit and see what had changed in that time and also to see some new areas such as the Selous Game Reserve, the island of Pemba and Zanzibar also Tarangire National Park and Loliondo in the north. As I have already covered much ground on this trip, I will mention some of the highlights.

The Selous Game Reserve is my new favorite destination for safari! It is a of the largest game reserves in Africa, with relatively few areas where the thing is that wonderful feeling of remoteness. To arrive and go straight to Kiba Point was a very beginning to spoil the trip. It is part of the rivers of sand set-up, but it is a private course that is taken only for groups of up to 8 people – which has four very broad and open-sided rooms with thatched roof (such as houses!) face down on the Rufiji River, the largest river in East Africa.

Full luxury and brilliant career, this area has a great home away from home feeling and offers a variety of activities ….. my favorite is the boat ride up, at Stiegler's Gorge where it stopped after one hour of game viewing (we saw buffalo, hippos, elephants, giraffes and a lot of birds from the water) out in a beautiful white sand beach surrounded by rocks and steep slopes of the ravine full of life and trees. Here we tried our hand at fly fishing and between us we caught three catfish! What an awesome place to stop and be surrounded by nature. Units take you through beautiful landscapes, lush some Recent rains and need much, and some of us went for a nice walk through the jungle only to find at the top of a hill with a fantastic view of 360 degrees and a Full bar set for our lives wandering. Fly camping for a night on the river is a necessity. Being a big seafood lover, I was delighted to be served for something big and squid, while snapper stay at Kiba Point – are just a short distance from the east coast, so it was a novelty to be fantastic with fish and shellfish in the woods!

On the island of Pemba and Fundu Lagoon – the only hostel on the island so you know you are going somewhere special! A short twenty minute flight from Zanzibar is then met at Fundu Lagoon car, driven 30 minutes across the island for his ship to Fundu itself. It was built by twin brothers Alex and Marcus and what actually is a great place with a great sense of space – you can be as social or private you want and seem to combine the two effortlessly. There is so much to do here and if you are not one lying on a beach! You can go snorkeling and diving on the island of Misali where water is the most beautiful I have seen, clear and visibility in coral reefs was just perfect. You can also go for a walk in the town where the hostel owners invest in community projects, or you can go fishing for your lunch, take a picnic …. certainly not bored and friendly and professional staff always seem to be about tips on what to do or help with deciding which cocktail to try putting sun! There are so many different places to eat here, either on the beach, the pier at the bar or the pool bar of the hill – or just in the cool and airy dining room thatched.

So all in all, Tanzania is now offering a mix of large areas and fields to visit and there are still relatively intact parks many to explore. The Selous is definitely one of my new favorite places and Pemba is also a place for some time winner great beach. There is something for everyone here and still much more to see ……. not be disappointed with safari or the beach from here, but remember that Tanzania is a big country to cover and there is plenty of travel involved! Its vastness and raw beauty is what makes it stand out in my mind as very special.
