Fly fishing has been around since ancient times, but the first recorded reference to the use of artificial flies appeared in the late 2. A Roman with name Aelian wrote about Macedonian fishermen in the river Astraeus that fish caught with artificial flies. He described the flies that had been made from red wool and chicken feathers attached to a hook. The bar and chain that they used were 6 feet long and had some success in catching fish. Along the years, people have been enjoying fly fishing and write about it.
Fly fishing in modern times originated in the northern rivers England and Scotland. Not much was written about him until 1496 when the "The Fysshynge Treatyse at an angle 'was published by Dame Juliana Berners. The book contains instructions for making rods, lines and hooks used in fly fishing. She also described the different fly dressings used at different times year. Patterns for fly fishing described are still in use today and fishermen believe they are effective for successful fly fishing. Popular patterns include the woolly worm, Mosquito Black, Dun and turning Stonefly.
Dame Juliana also describes the bars used at the time. The bars were about 18 feet long and made of very flexible wood. The lines were shorter than those used today and were made of hand-braided horsehair. The line was attached to the rod tip and a general rule at that time was that there should be greater than the rod.
Izaak Walton published his book "Compleat fisherman 'with the first detailed written about fly fishing. In fact, two chapters were written by his friend Charles Cotton. The rods and flies is described in the book were similar to those described by Dame Juliana. The description of the lines was slightly different in that the lines were about 6 feet longer than those used in the 1400's, although they were still made of horsehair. The book also describes the sharp lines and this was considered the first description written by the sloping lines.
Fishing line manufacturers began mixing silk with horsehair for fishing lines in early 1800. The line of silk first made during the Civil War. The lines of silk was a layer of fat that made them waterproof. Following the invention lines silk fishing, horse hair was never used, though the lines of horse hair sometimes can be found in England until World War II. However, after the first line of nylon was manufactured in 1948, most manufacturers began using synthetic materials for the fly fishing line. Technological advance and precision engineering helped to create a tapered line automatically in 1952.
