If you have ever experienced a day when the fish were hitting the wing, but had trouble setting the hook, then it is likely that the hook was necessary using a few strokes or through a whetstone. It can be very frustrating to know which fly pattern tied to the end of his line, but every success Joy comes with only fleeting, because the hook just will not set.

Do yourself a favor and invest in a hook sharpener. You can buy a grinder that fit perfectly inside your jacket or shirt pocket for only a few dollars. Believe me, the few dollars will pay off in good solid hook groups.

It's easy to take the edge off the tip of a hook. If you've ever been on strike against the hook of a tree branch on a model back, or blow a rock has probably hindered its hook. Any tie in a new place soon, or simply refine that point with a few strokes of the sharpener.

To improve the hook, hold point facing you, and simply the angle grinder, with 3 or 4 times. Turn the hook about 90 degrees and again, 3 or 4 times should be well. Repeat this step twice more, and you should have a hook that'll be fine.

There are a couple of other things worth thinking inspect their hooks this spring. I would like to relate a frustrating experience I once had:

Last year while fishing fly for some smallmouth bass very nice, I tied on a Muddler Minnow. Sure as I expected, that caught the interest of a fish in Nice. I felt like saying tugboat story and then heard the splash of a low start of their struggle as the hook set. Well, the fight was, but only for a few seconds. My first thought was that was just one of those times when I had not set the hook well. He did not even bother to check the fly – I was too excited about the prospect of enticing another low for hit the Muddler.

The following scale, was the same, only this time, I could feel the fly dropped in a strange sort of way. Decided change flies, and when I went to eradicate the fly on my line, I discovered that the whole meaning of the fly was lost. Because I was fishing a little water that flows very fast on a pile of rocks, I figured that had initially been fishing with a defective hook that broke when hitting a rock.

Tied Muddler in a second. As drifting through the rapids, which again had the thrill of 'fish on! "Nice as another smallie took place. The excitement was short lived, for the second time and again, I discovered that the point was broken.

I went through about 5 of these Muddler minnows, all with the same experience. It was just a little later I realized that what probably happened was that whoever had tied flies had used way too much pressure on the hook in vice, and had weakened by the angle enough for the stage, just broke every time a fish hit the fly.

The moral of the story is sure not to over tighten the vice, when attaching the fly patterns for the next season!

There is another way you might hook to weaken and eventually break at inopportune times, and is for incorrect disposal of the tongue. Often, I have seen fishermen remove the tab by placing a pair of nose pliers through the point, and pressing down on the tongue. A better way to do this is to hook the tip of the forceps, the forceps extends beyond before you pull the tab down and the removal of the tongue. You spread the pressure over the length of the point rather than run the risk of weakening a smaller area of the hook.
