What kind of fly-fishing should be west of the Missouri River from Great Falls, MT?

Not sure what kind of flies to be used for fly fishing at this time of year. I went on today without success.

Are you fishing for farmland, say Casdade to Great Falls? Or at Holter Dam to Cascade area? If the land is cultivated, which have never fish there. Holter Dam waterfall, is a different story. Nymphing is really great this time of year. Dry fly hatches when you look out. The Missouri River fish flies mostly very small, much more smaller than many other rivers in Montana. In the past I've been very lucky with these nymphs fished 3 to 5 feet in a strike indicator: Bead Head Hare's Ear with flash; BH Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear, BH Copper John, BH Lightening Bug, Pheasant Tail and BH Pheasant Tail Flash; Brassie. All these rights from the bottom fish. To dry the Elk Hair Caddis in tan or brown is good as is the Parachute Adams or Adams. All these are small, nothing about size 16. The fish really key in on small flies. In some of the holes deeper than some streamers could deepen after the Browns. I looked at the following info from my copy of the Montana fly fishing guide. Midges exit throughout the year on the Missouri. Flies well be the Griffith Gnat 18-24; Adams 16-24; Palomino Midge 16-24; Serendipity 16-24. The pale morning Duns should be start very soon if not already. Fly like a PMD Crippel 16-22; Sparkle Dun 16-22; Rusty Spinner 16-22; CDC Transitional Dun 18-22; Hare's Ear Nymph 16-20; Pheasant Tail Nymph 16-20. The Caddis should be out by now and flies like the Black Caddis Pupa 16-18; X Caddis 16-18; Emergent Sparkle Pupa 16-18; Hemingway Caddis 16-18; Tan Caddis 16-18; Elk Hair Caddis 16-18; Soft Hackle 14-18. Good luck. Larry
