fly fishing in turkey
Hornet, or some sort of bee in Turkey?

I recently returned from a holiday in south western Turkey, around Kas and Dalaman, and wondered about a wasp looking insect i saw there. There were hundreds of these "hornets" flying around swimming pools and places where people eating food. I saw one of them grabs a piece of fish off a plate. Some appeared to be almost 2 inches long, and you could feel the wind when flying behind you. Any ideas?

Yes, probably was a Hornet. You do not say if it was yellow and black striped, but the Hornets are similar to the behavior of wasps. In late summer when prey is becoming scarcer wasps are going to invade a picnic and try to snatch food. In particular like cold cooked chicken! Even land on the arm and try to exploit their flesh with its mouthparts to bite, not confuse, but their meat for food. The Hornet is only a certain kind of wasp large. They make a deep buzzing sound as they fly by you
