I was having a conversation with an acquaintance the other day who told me he was planning a vacation to an area where there are great opportunities for fly fishing. I I asked, "Are you going to hire a guide to the river?"
My friend thought that this was unnecessary. "I know how to throw and catch fly, why do I have to spend money on a guide? "he asked.
When heading off into uncharted waters, it is often a good idea find a local guide at least one of the days fished, even if you are an experienced fisherman. Most guides want you to be successful and can put fish quickly with their local knowledge of the water and fly patterns that are most commonly adopted by fish. Often, they have their own "secret" you will not find on Internet forums and message boards.
If you are a beginner, a guide can help you with quality problems and will likely be able to teach you about reading water.
Not only that, a fishing guide fly can help keep you safe. Many rivers and waters have their own hazardous areas and know where and how to deal with them often is something that can only come with an intimate knowledge of a river. One day, while fishing the water Sixemile River in Northern Ireland, I was wading in knee deep water when my guide warned me against falling deep with me. If I had not hired my guide, it is very possible that I had taken a wrong step and perhaps suffered an injury, or at least a day in ruins, with broken equipment.
When you're talking to a guide with the idea of hiring him or her, be honest with them about their experience of fly fishing. If you have been only a couple of times, do not tell that you are an expert and can ford water rafting. It will make it a frustrating day for both.
Be sure to ask your guide if they provide arts and what type. Will I need to bring along your own boots? What kind of wading birds of the guide is recommended? Do you provide flies and if so, is there an extra charge for that? What's for dinner? Some guides will offer a boxed lunch while others like you to bring your own. Do not judge a guide for whether or not it provides the lunch, however. Some are not so great in the kitchen, but are terrible in the river. "
Calling fly shops that are local to where you want to fish can be a great way to learn than what is recommended in the area. Sure to find out if your guide is trained in first baseman help and let them know of special medical requirements of the physical restrictions you may have.
With the two of you working together, you must have a great day, regardless of the conditions that are fishing in
