What fly fishing flies / methods work best for you in the river, fish in general, and Whare is it located?
Just seeing what the flies and methods work best for you in the river fish.
For fresh water, mainly rivers, fish that a few rivers in Washington State, with which the principal is the Yakima River. The fish that I laugh a lot. My real love story "is with Montana. I fish the Missouri River Holter then to the dam of the cascade. This area is located between Helena and Great Falls, where the river is coming out of the Rocky Mountains and is starting to hit land agricultural flat. The other area of Montana that I like is go to the Dillon area, in southwestern Montana. There are 5 excellent rivers for fishing within a few hours of driving: Madison, Beaverhead, Big Hole, Jefferson and Ruby. El Boqueron is my favorite with a second near the Beaverhead. Last year a group went to Casper, Wyoming and Fishing the North Platte River. That's a good place to go and I will return there to fight the Rainbow again. Just for information, in all rivers throughout above, they always do guided trips in drift boats or rafts rigid frame. The guides know the rivers and flying fish are taking the time to be fishing. Which greatly increases the catch (and release) type. As for the flies, as the feeding of fish 90% + of the time of the nymphs, which is the type of fly mostly fish. I always leave the guides, but I tell them that the fish nymphs, streamers or dry, which is always the best way to fish in that particular time on the River. Most of the time is nymphing. I come prepared to fish all three ways. I love the dry fly fishing, but if you are limited to a few days you will rather slow. However, when the fish come to the surface and begin to take the flies, then I switch to my dry fly rod. For dry rivers, major are the flies Caddis, Parachute Adams, BWO, PMD; variations of grasshoppers and stimulators. The flies used in the Yakima and Missouri tend to be smaller in size. Flies around Dillon rivers may be higher, depending on what is coming. For nymphing, most of the time I'll use a double flight system, but Wyoming is a triple system of flying. I guarantee that during the day in any of the rivers that end up using San Juan Worms, Beadhead Flashback Pheasant Tails, (I realized I forgot another list nymph well that is a must have, the hare's ear) Beadhead ears and ears with flash Beadhead Hare Hare, copper Johns, Bra (another I think I forgot to mention before, apart from this also) Lightening Bugs and Prince nymphs. Then there are some Caddis nymphs, pairing guides that are favorites in its rivers. The guides also use some of its own Stonefly nymph patterns. For streamers, is what the guide wants to, usually a house fly tied to their own that really seems to work in their rivers. Sometimes it seems that the fish will take a variety of flies and other times they are introduced into a particular insect and if you do not have a good imitation of that insect, it will be a slow day. I've had days when flies were changing about every 10 to 15 minutes because we have not unable to find what they wanted. Over time we have had in the march of the day and have a blast. Larry
