Steelhead fishing in winter is never easy, even during the good times. But when mid-season stagnation set in around February, things can be downright difficult. The tracks of large hatchery rainbow that provide good fishing as December and January have decreased considerably to a trickle in most rivers. And the big wild fish that will cause much excitement at the end of the season have not arrived yet. In a coast-wide average, which simply are not as Steelhead many of our rivers and streams in February as in the rest of the season.
The fish may be fewer and further between, but not fishermen. A constant flow fishing boat puts every inch of likely looking holding water, and popular riverside paths traversed by fishing muddy bank. The fish available in most streams get pounded hard on a daily basis. And it helps when prolonged cold climate results in cool, clear water and spooky, slow trout rainbow.
These are just some of the reasons why many fishermen rainbow trout refer to February as breaking the "midseason" in fisheries, and others call the "dog days of winter." February is a great time of year for the fishermen to take advantage of discounts, guided tours. The Fishing is a challenge but worth it!
Things I would use to catch Steelhead in the winter would be: Hardware (connectors, scoops or Spinners). Fly as Black Stones, Hex nymphs, bead heads, and flies eggs. Other methods, such as spawn, wax worms drift are also used.
Rainbow trout can fish the bait stick, Tiny Spinners, wax worms, and fly fishing with nymphs.
Be sure to check the hatch charts for the river are fishing to understand more about the bugs in the water, this will give a basis of purchase or to tie the right bug. Always remember that fishing winter should be done slowly and patiently.
I encourage you to experience a guided fishing trip for steel head on the Muskegon River in Newaygo, Michigan, which is less than an hour from Grand Rapids, MI. Muskegon River has some of the more favorable Steelhead, salmon and trout fishing in the Great Lakes region! With extensive gravel bars, slow deep holes, runs and more than nine miles of spawning gravel, not surprisingly, the Mighty Muskegon is home to trout and many species of game fish.
Enjoy your day on the water.
